Thursday 13th September
Taking a pedalo up Turtle River at Georgiopolis - saying hello not only to several small turtles, but many dragonflies, a very territorial kingfisher, and a very persistent duck that followed us all the way up river and back because Ian wouldn’t stop throwing him grapes!
Followed this by perfect lunch of small fish and salad at beach taverna. Mmm.
Sunday 16th
Had lunch with Debbie and Vanessa among cypress woods beyond Vamos. Then we all drove to see Joelle and her fabulous yurt. They are building a beautiful, off grid green homestead. Very inspiring. And the first drops of rain of the Autumn fell while we were in the yurt!
Monday 17th
Studied a buzzard as it sat patiently atop a cypress studying the valley. Then it flapped off to a telegraph pole, apparently unimpressed!
Thursday 20
Wonderful trip to the remote south coast with Ingrid and a bunch of Austrian friends. Stopped on the way to collect green serpentine.
Stripped off when we reached the cosat at Ammouda - a non-location with one tamarisk tree for shade, dunes swathed in sea daffodils, and glorious deep green sparkling waves. Bliss!
On the way back, as we stopped for coffee and herbal concoctions at Spili, shocked to hear on Ingrid’s phone that bushfire was raging around her village of Aptera. Although she later got a message saying it was under control, we could see the hillside and the hilltop Roman fort on fire as we drove to Kalives, and I culd still see the orange glow from our balcony at home. Very scary, but Ingrid stayed admirably calm and was determined not to let it spoil her day - a very rare day out for her!
