Santa Fe, New Mexico

big expectations, but little time! Bit of a shock to meet a real town with dual carriageways. El Rey is priced modestly among the many motels on the busy road out, but it offered us a haven of gardens, trees, bird song and a delightful outdoor hot tub.
We had an dinner of delicious tamales at La Fonda’s exquisite stained glass walled restaurant. Apart from that it was very classy window shopping.

The Georgia O’Keefe Museum was top of my list for the morning and didn’t disappoint, though somehow there didn’t seem quite enough in the exhibition – they change it every few months. We wandered in and out of various galleries, including one with an exhibition of photographs of Frieda Kahlo.
Browsing round a Mexican furniture shop on the way back to the hotel, Ian felt the need to buy a wash basin.
Supper was a Japanese takeaway from across the road, simple, fresh and delicious.
The Rough Guide took us to another extreme breakfast – eggs Benedict and huevos on a mountain of chilli chicken livers for Ian. Hot muffins and scones come free. As we left, the Sat morning brunch line had formed.
